This is the new Alton 2.0 version for 2012,
similar to the original Alton but upgraded with added reinforcement
in key areas to help them last even longer!
The Alton is a stylized low-cut day hiker that's vegan,
eco-friendly, and built to last! Made of industrial hemp with extra
reinforcements for added durability, they're made from the
strongest materials while being kind to the earth. Dual density
outsole provides excellent traction, while spaced lugs in the sole
prevent mud from packing in during off-road adventures. Recycled
PVC bumpers on the toe box and heel counter give extra protection
and reinforcement around the areas that take the most abuse.
Removable foam insole allows you to add your own custom insoles or
orthotics. And, best yet, they're so comfortable from the first
moment you wear them, there’s no extended break-in period like
there is with so many other hiking styles.
The Alton is available in Men's sizes 8-13. Normally $84.95 per
pair, now on sale for $69.95!

Great when new; doesn't last
From Graham First of Kitchener, Ontario on .
I agree with the previous review. Outstanding when brand new, but wears out far too quickly. The upper started fraying and developing a hole after only a few months. I thought that perhaps they would survive just daily wear better than landscaping work, but nope. Will be looking for something in a synthetic also, such as from "Vegetarian Shoes", where I have had much better luck in the past.
Great while it lasts
From Anonymous of Hamilton, Bermuda on .
As a landscaper, I'm always on my feet, sometimes on rough terrain. This shoe is very comfortable, of course feeling best when it is brand new, and I am very pleased with the use of hemp, however this shoe does not last as long as the vegan Garmont or Montrail shoes that I have worn previously. In fact, the Garmont Nagevi shoes I bought years ago have outlasted the past 3 pairs I've bought since. I wish Vegan Essentials would re-stock more of those brands that I have found last longer. Yes, hemp is a more eco friendly material, however if I have to buy 3 hemp shoes to last the same time as 1 synthetic material shoe, I'd prefer to save the time and money. The high humidity and fabric elements of the this shoe may require more cleaning as it holds scents and moisture faster than a synthetic variety. Also, better trade considerations would be appreciated as these are made in China. Nice to have the option for a hemp shoe, though. Thanks.
