I bought out the whole supply

Chao is one of the best vegan cheeses I've had, and I've been a vegan for 17 years.
Ok substitute
From C.C. of Lumberton, New Jersey on .
Umm, I'm kinda confused by reviews saying original "tastes just like cheese." It does not taste anything like cheese to me, but it's not terrible. I bought this along with two other vegetarian "cheeses," and I was SO excited to try this one because of the reviews. However, I tried the others and was somewhat disappointed, then tried Chao, and it tasted pretty much like both the others (Parmela Nut Cheese and Tofutti). I did grow to like it on crackers because of the texture.
A revelation!
From Kathy of Cleveland, Ohio on .
I have a serious sensitivity to milk protein and haven't had cheese, milk, cream, yogurt, etc in more than 20 years. Until today. Today I had my first grilled cheese sandwich in more than 20 years. Chao tasted, melted, and made me swoon just like I had hoped. My only teeny tiny complaint is that it is a bit -- just a bit -- salty, but that's a price I'm more than willing to pay. Thank you, Field Roast!
first vegan cheese I ever liked to eat plain! YUM!
From Kari Olsen of Philomath, Oregon on .
I absolutely love the Chao cheeses. I was a major cheese-hound before I became vegan, and I've tried MANY kinds of vegan cheese. I found some vegan cheeses I like a lot in recipes, like vegan macaroni and cheese or nachos, but this is the only vegan cheese I've ever liked to eat just plain. I used to love eating mozzarella or Monterey jack plain too, and the creamy original reminds me of those white cheeses or Swiss.
I like the spicy kind on vegan burgers, or for short-cut grilled cheese - toast bread in the toaster, then put the cheese slice on and melt in the microwave. If I can stop myself from eating the slice plain while the bread is toasting!
I like both the taste and the aftertaste of the creamy original so much, I've been having it plain for dessert!
best vegan cheese option
From Anonymous of ann arbor, Michigan on .
definitely the best vegan cheese option out there. it's expensive but i wouldn't want to eat this like every day anyways. just something special every now and then.
Delicious snack
From Anonymous of Neenah, Wisconsin on .
I really enjoy the creamy original. It is fairly addictive and makes a great snack. Most vegan cheese is awful. This is a delightful exception. It is not an analog for swiss or other cheeses. However, no one expects swiss slices to taste like processed American cheese. Unique is OK if it is delicious.
Great treat
From Anonymous of New Port Richey, Florida on .
Ok, I understand the concern for no nutritional value, but this cheese is to be viewed as a treat, and that is exactly what it is! It has an amazing cheese texture, taste (although a mild one), and melting ability (takes a little longer, be patient!) Anyway, my point is, moderation people! Because of the nutritional value, eat it moderately to enhance your animal free diet. Want nutrition? Make grilled cheese on organic grain breads (ie. Dave's Killer Bread), or Mac and cheese with organic wheat, quinoa, ir brown rice pasta, or pizza with organic whole grain crust, and org.pizza sauce, topped with veggies. An animal free diet takes creativity and research, but it is so worth it for our health, the animals and our environment. WIN, WIN, WIN!
Gave us digestive issues
From Anonymous of Montreal, Quebec on .
This cheese tastes great as a grilled cheese however it sent both of us straight to the bathroom. It is a processed food and we are used to eating cleaner healthier foods so that could be why. It also has no nutritional value (calcium or protein) so while it tasted good, I wont be buying this again.
Awesome
From Anonymous of Hamilton, Alabama on .
This is the best cheese substitute I have found. Tastes like real cheese. Wonderful for someone who can't eat dairy. This is the closest I've found in taste and texture. Can eat alone and makes great grilled cheese sandwiches. Now, just need to try on pizza.

This cheese is ok. The texture is right but there is no REAL CHEESE taste. To me, the creamy original tastes like a butter spread.

Finally a vegan cheese I LOVE
From Anonymous of Plymouth, Massachusetts on .
I had pretty much given up on vegan cheeses and accepted that I will no longer have cheese in my life. Which is fine, obviously so much better to keep animals from being tortured or to eat animal pus mixed with baby cow growth fluid- end rant. This cheese is amazing! It's not an overwhelming flavor, sort of similar to mozzarella (the original flavor) and it's almost buttery tasting. I can't get enough of it! Although this is obviously not a health food, but I will make sure to have this on hand always, and to try the others flavors! Thank you to the people who found the trick to making great tasting cruelty-free cheese!
Up the nutritional value!
From Deidra Stirneman of Austin, Texas on .
I watched/heard a rave review of this product on a vegan vlog I follow. So, naturally, I found my way to Vegan Essentials to see about ordering. Once I looked at the virtually non-existent nutritional value, I decided to wait.
I don't understand why so many vegan cheeses don't provide a real alternative to cheese -- i.e. make a product with calcium, protein and other nutritional equivalents.
That would really seal the deal for me. I don't care to eat something that is just a replacement for a non-vegan food without having the nutritional benefits as well. That just means I have to search elsewhere for my calcium and protein. I don't want to do that and won't.
I gave the product three stars even though I haven't actually tried it. I'm guessing it's a tasty product, but, please guys, fortify it.
Original flavor Chao
From Anonymous of Louisburg , North Carolina on .
Can't believe I found this fantastic cheese at Walmart. For me this is the first vegan cheese that can be eaten without mixing it with other ingredients for it to be delicious. I am so pleased!
Not impressed
From Anonymous of Mtl, Quebec on .
My 1-star rating is based on the following factors:
TASTE- I only tried the original one, but it basically tastes like the "earth balance" spread. While this can be good to spread on toast, taking a bite out of it is pretty gross.
INGREDIENTS- there literally is no nutritional value in this whatsoever. Only fat and sodium.
VALUE- Paying around $8.00 for this is ridiculous.
Conclusion: I feel that people who eat these kinds of foods on a vegan diet will not be able to sustain the lifestyle. Either they will go broke or get sick from lack of nutrition or both.
Awesome! Finally can eat Grilled Cheese!

You never know what you miss til you have it again! Makes the best grilled cheese sandwiches ever! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!!!
Amazing taste, 0 nutrition
From Anonymous of Ithaca, New York on .
While I am not vegan I can say this stuff (the original) tastes like a salted mozzarella which usually has lactose in it. Aged cheeses like the sharp cheddar I love (non-vegan) do not in general contain lactose, thankfully from my experience. That being said I use this as an occasional, once in a blue moon replacement for those softer cheeses that do contain lactose. I will definitely not stop eating sharp cheddar cheese because this vegan cheese has no protein, calcium or other trace minerals animal cheese contains. If they could remake this certified gluten free (I'm also allergic to gluten. Joy.) and with calcium and protein, lower carb, same taste, I would probably give up cheese. No lie. It does taste that good. I just can't justify the 0 nutrition over real cheddar aged cheeses, and the $8 price tag no less vs. $4 for a local dairy farmer for twice the amount for a lactose free cheese. SO I guess what I'm saying is, I'm so darned conflicted!!!! If you want a vegan cheese that tastes like cheese though, as a cheese eater, I obviously give it my vote on the flavor front. (I do realize this was made primarily to give vegans the taste of cheese they miss. I just am one of those foodies that always strives to have nutrient dense foods in my diet. And I love cheese too much to give it up--and I love supporting my local dairy farmer. :))
exeptional!

Love this product immensely! We use it for all kinds of sandwiches but absolutely love it in panninis cz it melts beautifully!
Please try it, I can guarantee you'll love it!
Best Vegan Cheeeeeese
From Anonymous of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on .
I can believe how tasty this "cheese" is!!! The original flavor is all that I have tried yet, but I liken it to brie when melted. It makes a great grilled cheese sandwich! Tomorrow I am going to melt it over baked pears, with a sprinkle of toasted pistachios, yum!!!! If anyone says they do not care for it, well they must work for another vegan cheese maker!
Love it
From Sasha of Fairfax, Virginia on .
I ordered the creamy original for the first time and holy smokes it tastes like cheese! I love it so much. Tastes between mozzarella and meunster or havarti to me. I've been making all of my non-vegan friends try it and they all agree how great it tastes. Thank goodness for vegan essentials because I can't find this flavor in the store.
It's CHEESE!
From PatrickM of Oakland, California on .
When this (Creamy Original) arrived I put it in the refrigerator. And there it sat. For weeks. I eyed it suspiciously every time I opened the refrigerator because I just knew that after taking a bite, that horrible "OMG WHAT IS THAT HORRIBLE AFTERTASTE" would take over and make me weep inside. But, finally, I decided to give it a try and made a grilled cheese sandwich (the real kind, in a pan, with Earth Balance).
WOW! It tastes JUST LIKE CHEESE! Others have said provolone, which I agree with when not melted, but melted it reminds me of Havarti.
Anyway, my refrigerator is never without this product now. In sandwiches, melted on Gardein burgers, creamed spinach (use cashew milk), finely chopped and tossed over pasta...anything you used to use cheese in is possible again. Amazing.
I personally promise you will not be disappointed!
It tastes JUST like cheese!!!
From Kristina Cegbe of Houston, Texas on .
Okay you guys, I have only been vegan for 2 1/2 months so I remember how cheese tastes...I bought the Original and took it to my moms house.
I took the first bite and I was thrilled!!! My mom and stepdad are carnivores and they agreed, it tastes like cheese!!!
I would say it's along the lines of provolone.
HAPPY AGAIN :)

YES! .. just, yes!
I agree ith all the 5 star reviews
From Anonymous of Los Angeles, California on .
I bought this on the spur of the moment, and had never seen it before. I was trying to find something else for picky vegan kids to eat.
They didn't like those Go VEGGIE! slices, that are NOT vegan, unless you buy the purple pack.
We tried Daiya, and found it yucky.
So we just haven't bothered trying to find anything else.
But since I happened to see it, I bought some.
I was pleased with the texture, upon opening it. The slices peeled apart, without comming apart. I tore a tiny corner piece off, and was amazed! It tasted like Provalone, my favorite type of cheese, when I was still ignorant. I was raised up on the standard American diet, of meat or Animal product EVERY meal 3x a day forever, including public schools giving ONLY milk to drink all through school, and it being touted in health class, and everywhere.
I slowly got enlightened and became a vegan, though I missed my provalone sandwiches.
I haven't had one in 20 years.
After tasting this, and tearing the 1st piece up to share with everyone, everyone loved it!
I promptly set about making my beloved "provalone" sandwich, and felt so decadent doing so.
We'll be putting this on out meal plan, for every month from now on.
There's only one surprise, it has absolutely no protein, but that is not a deal breaker at all. In fact, I'll just use it like any other low nutritional seasoning, to improve the flavor of many dishes I have abandoned when I went vegan. Now, with this Cheeze, I can put it in salads, sandwiches, pizza, so much is possible again!
This is the ONLY vegan cheese I'll buy.
It is a long awaited treat.
Thanks Field Roast, and I think Rhondi is right, I think this IS a repackaged Violife product. It's made in Greece, and has the same vegan symbol on the pkg. Greece appears to be anti GMOs. Good for them! Greece firmly against GMOs, minister told Greenpeace - Σχολίασέ το
www.thetoc.gr/.../greece-firmly-against-gmos-minister-tells-greenpeace
I AM worried about there being GMOs in the product, even though the pkg says "NO GMO" because there's no actual certification of that. Too bad Field Roast can't get Non GMO Project Verified, to ease everyone's minds.
Tears of Joy
From Anonymous of Hartford, Connecticut on .
Wow! What a surprise!
I've been allergic to all dairy products (casein) for at least 20 years. Various substitutes for ice cream and mild have improved a lot, but cheese substitutes never been really good.
This "cheese" tasted like Muenster or Havarti! The texture is fine and it has a nice salty, creamy finish. It even MELTS!!
I actually wept tears of joy after munching on the first slice right out of the package and had an excellent grilled cheese sandwich for the first time in 20 years. HOORAY!!!!!
Fantastic!
From Anonymous of Brampton, Ontario on .
This is absolutely fantastic. I was someone who has hated all other vegan cheese alternatives, and was ready to give up, and this changed it for me. The texture is perfect, the taste, the smell, all of it. Creamy original makes perfect grilled cheese and delicious to even just eat out if the package. Even my omni family members couldn't tell the difference. Highly recommend.
Amazing
From Anonymous of Sf, California on .
I've only had the creamy original but it literally tastes like mozzarella cheese. It melts beauti fully if it's heated at a high enough temp but doesn't stay melt, as is the case with most vegan cheese. But definitely gotta try. I'm going to try the other flavors soon
Really really awesome!
From Elise of Pasadena, California on .
Sometimes I get accused by friends of being vegan too long to tell the difference, but REALLY if someone gave this to me I would have a hard time believing it was vegan, and my Omani friends agree this time!
Honestly tastes like cheese
From Angela Posner of Miller place, New York on .
I've been vegetarian since I was a child but only recently went vegan and I'm taking my whole family with me lol! So anyway the real issue was cheese with my son and husband..... I've only tried the plain chao so far and I think it really tastes like deli American cheese. My husband agreed! Same texture, no weird taste. I haven't tried melting it yet but so far it's good on its own!
Mac n Cheese
From Marissa of Palm Springs, California on .
I love to use the original flavor to make "mac n' cheese". It melts so well! Even my son loves it.
wow!!!!
From Shelby Remmel of Winter Haven, Florida on .
So I am an omni (seriously considering veganism though) and I ordered a bunch of vegan food, including the Chao creamy original cheese slices. I tried it and loved it!!! Tastes exactly like provolone cheese... I gave a piece to my mom without telling her what it was and, puzzled, she said "why did you give me a piece of cheese? is there something wrong with it?" she couldn't even tell it was vegan!!! Amazing.

Say CHEESE!
From Christa Hawkins of Decatur, Illinois on .
I've never found a palpatable vegan cheese, until now. I recently ordered the original flavor for the first time, and ate it straight from the package. It had a very mild flavor, but very realistically cheese taste. I cannot wait to make grilled cheese with it. I've heard it melts incredibly well.
It melts and is delish!
From Michelle Amicucci of Poulsbo, Washington on .
I LOVE Chao! It's the ONLY alternative sliced cheese I will eat. (I have a milk allergy). It melts very well and has a nice ''mild mozzarella' flavor (the original) or the sun dried tomato is Great too! No chemical or off-taste with this one, it's a keeper!

Number 1 slices
From Sarita of Cerro Gordo, North Carolina on .
All three are delicious directly from the package. That's something I thought I wouldn't experience from a vegan cheese. The Coconut Herb shocked me when I first tried it. It's the best I've purchased so far. It melts easily and doesn't just taste greasy like Daiya. I make a stupendous Alfredo sauce with it.
A blessing for vegans
From Lindsey of Columbus, Ohio on .
I would like to preface this review by informing you that I have tried EVERY vegan sliced, spread and shredded cheese sold in stores, and have hated all of it. Yes, even Daiya. I had given up all hope of finding a cheese replacement for sandwiches, "burgers" and grilled cheese (which is just grilled bread without it). But then, sitting below the shredded Daiya cheese at my local Whole Foods was this beauty: yes, I'm talking about Chao Cheese Slices. I was skeptical, and almost decided not to pick it up because of the price, but something in my heart pulled me to it. I let it sit in the fridge for a few days, nervous that I'd have to follow it with a shot of mouthwash to get the nasty taste that other vegan cheeses leave in my mouth. Finally, I hesitantly opened the package, took a bite, and waited patiently for the taste to send me running for the bathroom. However, to my surprise, it tasted JUST LIKE CHEESE. Not vegan cheese, but real, dairy cheese. I shared another slice with my non-vegan mom who found it surprisingly good and asked if I was sure it was vegan. But that's not the only good thing about this cheese. One of the biggest issues with vegan cheese is texture, but the texture here was spot on. This is a true blessing for all vegans.
Best vegan cheese out there !
From Jelena allen of Yuma, Arizona on .
I absolutely love the tomatoes cayenne ! Was teaveling several states this summer and discovered this brand. Oh my, best one out there ! Sad thing is ,it's not carried here where I live ! !
MMMM mmm!
From Anonymous of Port st Lucie , Florida on .
I love love love the creamy original! I want to try the other flavors but the creamy original is so good that I always instinctively buy it. I used a slice on a sweet earth patty and topped with benevolent bacon and made the tastiest vegan bacon cheeseburger! I also put it on a gardein meatball sub... delicious! Even my meat-eating boyfriend likes it. It doesn't melt as well as the daiya slices but the taste is far superior. Highly recommended!
Finally an AMAZING diarly free/gluten free "cheese"!!
From Amy of Rapid City, South Dakota on .
I was pleasantly surprised at this "cheese". I have been looking for a good diary free and gluten free cheese that tastes amazing and I found it!! I had to check the ingredients again to be sure, but like another reviewer stated pricey but totally worth it!!
High Praise!!
From Linda M. of Spokane, Washington on .
I ran across this cheese while doing some taste research for my brother. He is highly lactose intolerant and has done without cheese because of the "vomit aftertaste" in most non-dairy options. He was stunned by how real the Chao Original Creamy tasted and kept going back for more. He ate it plain, on sandwiches, and even rolled around pickled beans. The flavor reminded me of a mild Swiss cheese - mostly tasteless with a slightly sweet aftertaste. It melted well during my testing - again reminding me of Swiss cheese because it retained some of its form after melting.
Don't Miss Out--TRY THIS!
From Melissa W. of St. Louis, Missouri on .
LOVE LOVE LOVE! Chao cheese is the closest vegan cheese to real dairy cheese in taste and texture that we've ever tried. The first time my husband and I tried it, we stopped after the first bite to read the ingredients on the package to make sure it really was vegan--for us, the taste and texture was that close! My husband's favorite is the original flavor; I like all three. Chao cheese is great for sandwiches and for cheese and crackers, or just a snack. Would love to see this in a "string cheese" version. All the enjoyment and none of the guilt of dairy cheese. Keep up the excellent work, Field Roast! There are some really happy and grateful vegans in St Louis!!
Question About Ingredients

Ingredients include "modified corn and potato starch." Have these ingredients been GENETICALLY modified?
It tastes like CHEESE!
From Cara V of Cedar Rapids, Iowa on .
The creamy original flavor is my favorite. It tastes just like real cheese. I'd compare it to a mix of mozzarella and farmer cheese. I love it on crackers, veggie burgers, and for grilled cheese sandwiches. I wish they sold it in my town though. I bought some at Whole Foods in St. Louis and loved it.
Amazing
From Anonymous of Champaign, Illinois on .
I haven't eaten dairy cheese in 5+ years, and I feel like I've tried every vegan cheese product on the market. Some I like better than others. But the Chao original is the first vegan cheese I've tried that tastes like real cheese. Even my super skeptical teenager thought I was feeding him real dairy cheese. To me, the Chao original tastes like a mix of sliced (dry) mozzarella and muenster.
YES! YES! YES!
From Scott of Raleigh, North Carolina on .
I've been a 99.9% vegetarian for 40+ years. Cheese was my meat. For the past 2 years, I've been a 97% vegan. Tried probably every vegan cheese, never bought any of them a second time. Now, thanks to Chao, I enjoy cheese again. Pricey, but worth it!
I Don't See It
From Chester R York of East Point, Kentucky on .
I have read all these glowing reviews and I wonder what they saw that I don't. I anxiously tried it, and it looked fine, but the slices did not melt. They were like plastic or high heat wax, and they had no flavor. I expected something more enjoyable than that with the overly blown high price of it. This stuff was absolutely not like real cheese at all. I will never waste my money on this crap again. I was completely disappointed.
YUMMMS
From FTLA Apparel of Leominster, Massachusetts on .
Another amazing vegan product! I like the creamy original. I wish they came shredded too but that's okay, the slices do the trick too. Definitely the best dairy free cheese I've ever had. I've tried Daiya in a couple flavored but I don't much care for it. It has a weird taste and feels slimy (sorry Daiya) Field Roast hit the nail on the head with this vegan cheese!
Delicious!
From Mile of Los Angeles, California on .
I also have to compare this cheese to Swiss cheese. My meat eating family members say it doesn't have much of a flavor but it is one of the closer ones to real cheese (whatever that means). I can eat it alone by the slices or in a sandwich. By the way, it melts just like Daiya cheese! Needless to say it quickly became another favorite of mine. I bought two packs today and I'm well into one already. I would highly recommend it.
FINALLY
From Penn of Muskegon, Michigan on .
These. Are. Amazing. I can't tell you how real they taste. The original tastes like swiss, and the pepper and tomato tastes a itty bit spicy but delicious. I absolutely hate all fake cheeses- I think Daiya is disgusting, and teeze grosses me out, and anything by Go Veggie! makes me gag. But these... these are delicious. They melt, they aren't greasy, they taste amazing. I can have grilled cheese again!! I usually roll my eyes when people say, oh, THIS fake cheese is good... and I've lived without it rather than gag on gross stuff, but THIS...and it is really expensive, but that's because it will complete your soul. Totally worth it.

Like everyone else I thought vegan cheese was a misnomer, nothing could EVER actually taste like cheese. This stuff is incredible, right out of the package. I can't even tell the difference from regular sliced sandwich cheese. However, I'm confused by the reviews. My package says right on the label, NON-GMO. Matter of fact so does the product picture above. YAY!
Best Darn Vegan Cheese Ever
From SoDaiyaNOT of Washington, District of Columbia on .
Vegan cheese has been a major disappointment to me. I was just about to give up when one day at Whole Foods Chao appeared on the shelf. I thought, "well it can be any worst than the "D" brand (eew, yuk). much to my surprise, it was heavenly! Creamy, no unforgivable aftertaste. I was in love! Well, until I read a previous comment - not organic- gmo's possibly?? What can I say, I was desperate to find a good vegan cheese. For those of you who don't mind the gmo's, it is so worth trying. I like all three flavors but the original is my favorite.

I'm so happy, last week I tried Chao creamy original for the first time, And I was shocked it was vegan. The texture and taste is amazing, just like a real cheese. I'm vegan for three years now, and one of the things I missed the most was a good cheese, so I can't tell you how happy I am to discover this amazing cheese. I love it... And I can't wait till they find a way to make a vegan blue cheese :))

This is the best commerial vegan cheese I have ever tried. And I have tried most of them. The texture is incredible. It is so close to the real thing, I had to check the package again just to make sure it was vegan. It's firm, similar to real cheese slices. I have tried the original and tomato cayenne. The taste of the original is very nice. It is a mild cheesy flavor. The tomato flavor is even better. Cheesy and a little spicy.
Chao original- best cheese sandy
From VegMD of Jonesboro, Arkansas on .
I'm blown away by this cheese. I've steered away from vegan cheeses for years because all I've tried have been expensive, unpalatable mistakes that I've thrown away. Couple weeks ago stumbled on the 'vegan zombie blog' making a cheese sandwich with this brand and it looked so good, I bought some. It tastes real and it melts well. My ten year old likes it too- the ultimate test as my kids will turn their noses up at most 'fake' products. Try it!
OUTSTANDING!!!

Great!
From Eclectic of Marion, North Carolina on .
I bought the original and LOVE it. The best vegan cheeze I've tried so far (I regularly have Daiya and Teese). I found it to taste like Provolone and Swiss mixed. The texture was right on.
Another great fieldroast product!
From Jennifer Sloan of Scarsdale, New York on .
Field Roast has some excellent chefs working for them that are able to pinpoint exactly the right blend of ingredients to get a hugely satisfying vegan product. I tried the original. The texture (unmelted at least) is a bit like American Cheese but the taste is more like a mild swiss with a slightly sweet after-taste. It is truly delicious any which way you slice it (actually, it comes already sliced!) I'm not vegan, but I will be buying this product again anyway! Every product by Field Roast makes you do a double take of the package. It is always hard to believe there is no meat/dairy. I wish the burgers were less fattening, but try their sausages or meatloaf if you haven't already!

I agree that this is the best vegan cheese I've tasted! I was a little hesitant to try it at first (most vegan cheeses are alright, nothing special, and they can have an off taste to them), but this was amazing. I bought the Original and first tried it straight out of the package (and several more slices have gone the same way) and later I made a grilled cheese with it. DELICIOUS! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this.
Wow. Just, wow.
From Genevieve of Kingston, New York on .
I bought my first packet of Creamy Original slices today and was ready to try another 'good-enough' vegan cheese. (I also make my own from cashews.) Man, was I deliciously surprised. Not only the taste, but the texture and mouth-feel were so close to dairy slices that I checked the packaging to make sure I hadn't made a grievous mistake. As others have said, this is a game changer. Keep it up, Field Roast Chao! This is a winner!!!! THANK YOU!

This is the best vegan cheese I have tasted by far. The creamy original tastes remarkably like Swiss cheese, both in terms of flavor and texture. While I haven't tried to melt it yet, it definitely tastes delicious on its own and pairs perfectly with crackers and a good white wine.
loved it
From Anonymous of Amherst, Massachusetts on .
Loved it straight out of the package. I tried the herb flavor and I had no idea it was going to taste to me like swiss cheese. Don't take that too seriously because I've been vegan for over a dozen years and don't really remember what swiss tastes like... but it certainly satisfied a craving for swiss that I've been searching for for a decade. :)
Omnivore significant other agreed it's really good, and said "I see what you mean" to my swiss interpretation.
all three flavors great
From Anonymous of West Bend, Wisconsin on .
As others have said, the original is good to eat straight out of the package. My favorite is the tomato cayenne. It's not spicy to me, but the smell and flavor is like salsa and cheese blended together. My next favorite is the coconut herb. It's tangy and herby like a feta. Loved all three. Will probably buy the herb and tomato cayenne from now on.
Creamy Original is excellent

Nice flavor and texture, this is the only vegan sliced cheese I've liked so far, and it's good by itself right out of the package. Great for sandwiches. I haven't tried the other flavors yet.
No Flavor
From Robin of Dallas, Texas on .
I was really hopeful that we had finally found a vegan cheese that actually tasted like real cheese. Alas, it is not to be. This product has no flavor except any flavoring they add to it suck as the jalapenos. I'll keep searching.
Amazing.

I have tried all 3 flavors of the Chao slices. My favorite is the creamy original. I can't stop eating the slices directly out of the package. They are amazing on grilled cheese, quesadillas, breakfast sandwiches, pizza, and everything else I've tried it on. The Herb is my close second favorite.. directly out of the package, in quesadillas, on a baked potato. The Tomato Cayenne is my least favorite.. the fermented tofu flavor doesn't really come through much but it may be good melted in some sort of mexican inspired dish.
The best!

I must say, one of the hardest parts of me going vegan all those years ago was cheese. I have not found a quiality substitute until now. These cheeses are out of this world! My non veg husband fights me for the last slice!! The original tastes like provolone in my opinion which is fantastic. My non veg sister and cousin who HATE all things faux cheese actually loved them too.
Holy vegan cheese, Batman!

Where has this cheese been all of my (vegan) life?! So far I've only tried the creamy original, but it blew me away! Definitely the best slices out there. This is the only one I enjoyed eating straight from the package. Texture was perfect and, like another reviewer said, the flavor reminded me of string cheese. Also melted great in a grilled cheese sandwich. Highly recommended - great job, Field Roast!
lovely texture

I only tried the Original, and it's great. Very light in flavor, but it has the aftertaste of Kraft mac and cheese. Sometimes you just want a cheese texture in your sandwich, and this delivers. I can't wait to try the other slices.
Finally a Vegan Cheese I Like!

This is the first vegan cheese that I have ever liked. Just ate the original and tomato cayenne straight out of the package and they're great. So happy that these exist!
Field Roast has done it

I was skeptical, so I only bought one flavor. Now, I wish I'd purchased all three. I bought the creamy original and it's delicious. The flavor reminds me of good mozzarella string cheese and the texture is really nice. I have not cared much for the thought of cheese or cheese substitutes since going vegan, but this is a hit! Well done, Field Roast (-;
Fantastice!

Tried the Creamy Original and ate 3/4 of the package at once. Tomato Cayenne is good, to but the original is my favorite. Amazing flavor and texture. Yum! Price here though is almost double what I pay locally. Ouch!
Pretty Good

I tried the Original and it does taste like cheese. It is pretty tasty, but I disagree with another review. The flavor is more like Munster, not Swiss, as it does not have the bite to it that swiss has. Great for burgers.
Excellent texture and taste

I've tried just about every fake cheese option, and these slices were by far the best I've had. Like previous submissions, I still miss that cheese texture/taste (after ten years), and the slices worked perfectly in wraps and sandwiches. I'm stoked to use these over Diaya, and they don't stick to the roof of your mouth like Diaya does when it melts.
For a grilled cheese, I highly recommend the creamy original flavor, which melts and tastes nearly exactly like a quality American cheese. The other two flavors, while tasty, were better served in a wrap and unmelted.
+1
Quite Delish!
From Karin Bartimole of New Rochelle, New York on .
I tried all three and really enjoyed the Original (american cheese like) and Tomato Cayenne, especially when I mixd them together and melted them with pasta for a mac and cheese concoction! The coconut milk herby one was a little odd, to me. It had a sweet lemony flavor to me, that was almost more dessert like than savory - like cheese cake, if that makes sense.
I wish they were soy free, but at least they don't rely 100% on soy...
It's cheese!

I have never been a fan of Daiya so I have been desperately searching for something vegan to satisfy my cheese lust. This product goes beyond my expectations! I have always loved Field Roast and gained even more respect for them when they refused to test on animals in order to sell their products in Canada. Their vegan cheese is even better than any of the other Field Roast products.

Not being a coconut lover, I was a bit wary of this. I tried the 'creamy original' so I could tell what the actual cheese tasted like. It does have a slight coconut flavor to it, but overall, it is terrific. My biggest problem with it is not eating the entire package at once.
This is a cheese for eating, and not really for sandwiches, though. On a cracker, it is wonderful, on a sandwich the (expensive) flavor gets lost completely. I suspect even non-vegans would enjoy this as an eating cheese.
OMG OMG OMG!!!

did i say OMG??? opened the 'cresmy original' not expecting much,, because, well, ya' know vegsn cheese... sniffed first. hey!! this stuff actually smelled like real american cheese. bit a piece off of a slice.. hey!! really nice texture! chewed. creamy!! cheesy! not sweet or oily or weird tasting at all!!!! then tried the one with cayenne.. yum!!!!!! field roast has done it!!!! thank you from all of us who missed cheese but who's consciences would not allow them to eat dairy ever again!! please never stop making this,, and ve please never stop selling it!
AMAZING

I've been vegan for 10 years and I STILL miss cheese. You just don't get over a love like that, I suppose. Daiya has always been decent but let's be real, it's not fooling anyone. I think the newer FYH shreds are great when melted into things but neither are really close to the real deal.
BUT THIS...
I can't even explain how happy I am to have found this. Straight out of the package, it tastes like cheese. REAL cheese! I tried the creamy original and the coconut herb straight from the package. I personally enjoyed the coconut herb more because it had more tang and flavor than the original. The flavor is very similar to swiss, in my opinion. The original would be great in something more mellow where the cheese isn't the main event but it was just as delicious eaten straight from the package. I handed my non-vegan boyfriend a slice of each and he had no clue they weren't real dairy, he loved them. I'm sad that there's only 10 slices in a pack but that's only because I could eat the entire thing in a 5 minute sitting. It's that delicious. Word on the street is that this is repackaged Violife which just makes me more sad knowing that this is what American vegans have been missing out on this whole time. Well played, Field Roast.
