A European favorite! A savory paste that is
made from yeast, Marmite is an addicting and nutritious addition to
your vegan diet. With a rich, cheese-like flavor (like a
concentrated nutritional yeast), it's perfect as a light spread on
toast or crackers, added to soups or stews for a "beefy" stock
flavor, mixed in with grains or potatoes for a subtle flavoring…we
even love to dip pretzels in it! Loaded with vegan-source B
vitamins, Marmite is the one new item you won't want to do without.
4.4 oz jar is $5.99. Made in England.
Ingredients: Yeast extract, salt, carrot and onion
extracts, spice extracts. Enriched with Niacin, Thiamin
Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid and Cyanocobalamin
Marmite for Children Too
From Caroline G of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 10/11/2006.
My children ate toast "fingers" and Marmite (as most English children do) as soon as they could eat proper solid food. Apart from the excellent nutrition, it helps children to develop a taste for savory foods instead of requiring everything to be oversweetened.
great, but it doesn't taste cheesey (addition to previous review)
From Giselle of Annandale On Hudson, New York on 10/9/2005.
I saw that in the product description it's called "cheesey" but this is not true. You'd think it would taste cheesey, being made out of nutritional yeast, but its potency and sourness is a bit beyond cheese. This is a great spread, but if you're looking for a cheese replacement, this isn't it.
You either love it or hate it (I love it)
From Giselle of Annandale On Hudson, New York on 9/2/2005.
You swear it was salty, but that flavor is from the yeast. It has a strong, extremely potent flavor; you only need a teaspoon for toast. Good with toast and margarine. One problem, though... It's made by Unilever. Don't they test on animals?
Great for Meat-Eaters Too!
From Don Lussier of Hebron, Connecticut on 5/1/2005.
I'm not a vegan... I'm a dyed-in-the-wool carnivour. This stuff tastes GREAT. I eat it with butter on toast. Yum!
great way to get B12!

I'm not even British and I have become mildly addicted to this spread :) Beware, the strong taste can take some time to get used to...
