Weird texture, totally bland
From Celeste Lamosse of Eden Prairie, Minnesota on 4/8/2016.
These were awful. No other word to describe it. Slippery and totally weird texture. I think this is the kind of product you either hate or love.
From PJ C of Lawton, Michigan on 2/5/2016.
Tried these because they were on sale at the local healthfood store. I've bought lots of vegan faux-seafood over the years, and I tend not to like any of it that's made primarily from "konnyaku," (often labeled "yam starch") a rubbery, mild-tasting starch jelly popular in Japanese cuisine. These are no exception—I've had much better-textured and better-tasting vegan shrimp from Asian market freezer sections before. My wife said "tastes like glued wood" upon trying these, and I tend to agree. Maybe novel and worth trying once, but I think there are better, softer, and more convincing products out there.
These were delicious but..
From Amber Miller of Osceola, Arkansas on 9/30/2014.
You want to eat them as soon as you get done cooking them!! If you plan on putting some up for later or get distracted/let your plate sit there long enough for them to cool down, the texture becomes rough and chewy. Besides that, they taste like real shrimp! When they're hot, the texture is great! Next time I'll be sure to eat my food first and then watch the tv. :)
From trilingual1946 of Overland Park, Kansas on 6/28/2014.
Tried these because I had been curious about these products for a while. I did these in the toaster oven, following the instructions on the box. I recommend spraying the pan with cooking spray, otherwise some of the shrimp will stick. Once cooked, I thought these were surprisingly good but under flavored. The texture is quite realistic, but the flavor needs to be boosted a bit to taste "authentic." A little more maritime flavoring and a bit more of that iodine flavor are needed to come closer to the actual taste of shrimp. Baked according to the package instructions the coating came out nicely crispy. I ate the shrimp "as is" with a bit of tartar sauce and I enjoyed them. On the company's website it looks like they also have a non-breaded version that I think I'll look for. Combined with good andouille and chicken substitutes they would work well in a paella, or in jambalaya or gumbo!!! To boost the flavor until the makers do I'll probably sprinkle the shrimp with a little kelp powder, or perhaps try marinating them in kombu dashi to get closer to the flavor of real shrimp. But all in all these are a good product for those who are missing shrimp.
From Ron Z. of Green Bay, Wisconsin on 8/2/2013.
These were good. I just cooked them in the oven and dipped them in cocktail sauce and it was a nice meal. They really did taste like mild versions of shrimp. I think I will try them on tacos next with a nice slaw.
