Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), is a
naturally occurring free fatty acid found mainly in dairy products
and meat. Scientific research suggests that CLA helps build muscle
and reduce body fat. For vegans and vegetarians getting enough CLA
from diet alone may not be possible, in fact even for people who
consume meat and dairy getting enough CLA from diet alone for the
said benefits would require considerable intake of these types of
foods. This is very impractical, and would also have a seriously
negative effect on one's metabolism due to the high saturated fat
and calorie content of meat and dairy. DEVA Vegan CLA is produced
from linoleic acid in safflower oil by a patented technology.
Without CLA, many aspects of our metabolism fail to operate
efficiently, as Mark Stengler explains in Natural Physician's
Healing Therapies. "It (CLA) helps glucose get into muscle cells
more effectively, thus preventing glucose from being converted into
fat. It also helps fats enter the cell membranes of muscle and
connective tissue, where the fat is burned for fuel."
Studies show, CLA safely decreases body fat in four ways:
- Decreases the amount of fat stored after eating
- Increases how fast fat is broken down in fat cells
- Increases the rate of fat metabolism
- Decreases the total number of fat cells in our bodies
A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, published in
the December 2000 issue of the Journal of Nutrition found that CLA
reduces fat and preserves muscle tissue. According to the research
project manager, an average reduction of six pounds of body fat was
found in the group that took CLA, compared to a placebo group. In
another study that was published in Journal of International
Medical Research volunteers received CLA or placebo for 3 months,
and asked not to make any changes in their diet and lifestyle
during the study. The CLA group had a significant reduction in body
fat percent from 21.3% to 17.0%, and a reduction in body weight.
Many other studies can be found in scientific journals.

I've experienced some pretty nasty side effects from CLA, including acne, gas, increased blood pressure, increased appetite (strangely), and mild insomnia. Otherwise its a good product-- it has helped reduce body fat and given me more muscle mass, and also improves my energy levels.I've been playing with the dose to try to maximize the benefits while minimizing the side effects, but to no avail. Help?

I've been taking this for a year, along with eating a healthy vegetarian diet and working out 3 to 4 times a week. I'm in my 50's and this is the first time I have muscle that is defined. I believe it is this that has helped me to attain my goals in fitness.

i don't know how much weight i've lost, but i've gone down 2 inches in pants sizes. it targets weight in the hips, thighs, buttocks, not necessarily as much around the stomach. not instant, dramatic results because it helps you loose at a healthy rate.
